What is a Cockatiel?
Cockatiels:
My First Experience with These Friendly Birds When I first thought about getting a pet bird, everyone told me to start with a cockatiel. " I didn’t know why. Now, after keeping them, I understand.
What is a cockatiel? A cockatiel is a small parrot. They are not too big, not too small. The first thing you will notice is their crest on the head. When they are happy or curious, the crest goes up. When they are scared or sleeping, it goes down. It’s like they talk with their head.
They also have orange cheek patches. But some types don’t have them. They whistle a lot. They don’t talk like big parrots, but they can learn to whistle tunes.
Why I Chose Cockatiels
Friendly: They don’t bite hard. If you give them time, they sit on your finger and shoulder.
Easy to care: They don’t need big cages or expensive food.
Not too loud: Louder than a finch, but quieter than a macaw. My neighbours never complained.
Many colours: You will see grey, white, yellow, pearl. Every bird looks different.
What They Need Daily
I was scared at first that care would be hard. But it’s simple:
Food: Seed mix + fresh vegetables like palak, gajar, apple, and soft foods. No chocolate, no onion. And fresh water every day.
Cage: Big enough that they can open wings. Put 2-3 perches and toys. They get bored fast.
Time: This is the most important. If you ignore them, they get sad. 30 min to 1 hour daily with them is enough. Talk to them. They understand.
Sleep: 10-12 hours sleep. Cover the cage at night.
Common Mistakes New Fanciers Make
I made these mistakes, too:
Buying 1 bird and leaving it alone all day: Cockatiels are social. If you are busy, get 2. They keep each other company.
Only giving seeds: Seeds are like junk food. Mix with veggies, or they get sick.
Big cage but no toys: They need to chew and play. Or they start plucking feathers.
No sunlight: 15 min morning sun is good for their bones.
The best part is when you come home tired, and your cockatiel flies to the cage door and whistles for you. That small "peek peek" sound makes your day better. They don’t ask for much. Just food, clean water, and 10 minutes of your time. And they give you friendship in return. If you are thinking of getting a cockatiel, just go for it. Start with 1 pair. Learn. Make mistakes.
