Feeding EGG shells to Birds
Egg shells are good source of calcium, Calcium absorption of calcium from egg shell is 64% higher than the calcium from pure calcium carbonate due to certain proteins found in the eggshells. In addition to calcium and protein, eggshells also contain other minerals, which include strontium, fluoride, magnesium and selenium. Hence a good source as mineral supplement.
It is very important that the eggshell powder is prepared properly to be considered safe. Eggshells may be infected with Salmonella enteritidis. So it is very important that the eggs shells are microwaved for few minutes or boiled and completely dried before being crushed.
It is also better to feed egg shell powder instead of crushed shells, as sharp bits of the shell may injure the throat or the digestive system. So grinding them in powder form is the best option.
